Supporting the luminaires in the ceiling.
The method of support and subsequent future maintenance is very much dependent upon access being available above the ceiling in which the luminaires will be mounted (plank, composite, plaster, grid etc.) and whether this is possible or not.
Where personnel access from above is not possible, thought must be given to how the luminaire will be:
- Installed
- Supported
- Wired (Connected to mains electricity)
Where personnel access from above is possible, thought must be given to:
- The risk of personnel walking on the “in situ” luminaires.
- Is future maintenance preferable from above or below the ceiling? (i.e. Is IP65 integrity required when the lower frame / diffuser is removed for maintenance of the tubes or cleaning.)
- Preferred securing method for luminaire. (i.e. drops rods, side arms etc)
- Cable entry position for single or continuous runs. (If position is critical either for wiring or health and safety reasons.)
- Whether or not IP65 integrity is required when the lower frame / diffuser is removed for maintenance of the tubes or cleaning.
Grid Ceilings
There are many types of grid ceiling available and as result, dimensions of the extruded “T” section vary. When specifying a luminaire for grid type ceilings, these are some points to clarify and consider:
- The grid centres if not 1200mm x 600mm
- The actual dimensions of the “T” section (ie. Overall width and height of Tee section.)
- The width of the T section “shelf” on which the luminaire will rest. (Bearing in mind the vertical sides of the luminaire will extend beyond the height of the “T” section.)
- Any item of plant above the ceiling that may restrict luminaire heights or canopy buttress ends, required when using some specific lamp types.
- The risk of personnel walking on the “in situ” luminaires.
